土曜の午後、やるべき仕事もやらずにぼーっとBSを見ていたら、イギリスの骨董市などをめぐり鑑定やらアンティークの魅力やらを紹介する番組をやっていた。以前に気に入ってライの村で買ったRoyal Albert Crown Chinaのcup and saucerのセットを思い出し、詳しく調べてみることにした。
製品は無数にあり、シリーズも何万とあるので、探すのは容易ではない。Fuschiaなど似たパタンは見つかったものの、同じのがなかなかない。そんな中、ハンドルや裏の刻印による情報を掴んだ。

Royal Albertの製品は年代によって裏の刻印（back stamp)が違っているので見分けられるらしい。カラフルなスタンプは最近になってからで、私のは1927－35年の間に使われたblack back stampである。
さらにカップの形もArt decoとかAvonとか、Smoothとか、いろいろある。私のはCountessという形のだった。
探すこと数時間、ついに見つけたのは#223のRosedropというビンテージカップで、シリーズ名はrosedropだが、私のはそのシリーズになる前のものであるようだ。カナダアンティーク商かなにかのページで解説されているのによると次のとおり。
This cheery cup and saucer bears the hallmark of Royal Albert Crown China, England. The back-stamp dates the piece 1927 - 1935. The bright orange flowers hang gracefully from charcoal-grey vines. The cup stands
2 3/4" high x 3 3/8" across. The saucer measures 5 1/2". The rim of cup and saucer are trimmed in gold, as are the handle and footed base of the cup. The translucent china is pristine white and the cup shape is COUNTESS. There is a surface crack about 1/2 way up on the inside of the handle (pic. #1 & 2), but no chips or crazing present. The couple of dark spots seen where cup handle meets cup are the painted vine. This original design featured orange or pale yellow flowers. In the 1940's, Royal Albert reproduced the same pattern with pink flowers and named it Rosedrop; but these orange beauties are the original and very rare. Add it to your collection today.

要するに、Royal Albertは1940年代に昔のパタンを復活させるが、その時にバラ色に塗ってRosedropのシリーズとなった。しかしパタン自体は1927年から1935年の間にできており、当時の色は薄い黄色か濃いオレンジだったと。
そもそも、このデザイン、つるがゆらゆらそよいでいる中に小さな花がついているもので、バラではない。
私のはオレンジの方だ。90年代後半に10ポンドで買ったと思うが、妥当な値段だと思う。
